Custom Domains
Every project gets a *.weekendbuilder.io subdomain automatically. You can also point your own domain (e.g. api.myapp.com) at a project and WeekendBuilder will provision an HTTPS certificate for it.
How to add a custom domain
- Open the project card and expand the Custom Domain section
- Enter your domain (e.g.
api.myapp.com) and click Set domain - Create a DNS record at your registrar pointing the domain at WeekendBuilder (see below)
- Wait for DNS to propagate — this typically takes a few minutes but can take up to 48 hours
- WeekendBuilder will automatically issue a Let’s Encrypt certificate once DNS resolves correctly
Your original *.weekendbuilder.io URL remains active alongside the custom domain.
DNS record types
Subdomain (recommended)
Create a CNAME record pointing at your WeekendBuilder subdomain:
| Type | Name | Value |
|---|---|---|
| CNAME | api | my-project.weekendbuilder.io |
Replace my-project with your project’s slug. CNAME is the simplest option and automatically follows any IP changes.
Root / apex domain
Most DNS providers don’t allow CNAME records on the apex (e.g. myapp.com itself). Options:
- Use a subdomain instead (e.g.
www.myapp.comorapi.myapp.com) - If your provider supports ALIAS or ANAME records, point it at your
*.weekendbuilder.iosubdomain — these behave like CNAME at the apex - As a last resort, create an A record pointing at
178.104.149.179— but note this will break if the server IP changes
Certificate provisioning
WeekendBuilder uses Let’s Encrypt HTTP-01 validation to issue certificates for custom domains. Validation happens automatically when you set the domain. No action is needed on your part.
Certificate issuance can take up to 5 minutes after DNS propagates. If you see a certificate warning after that window:
- Verify the CNAME/A record is correct with
dig api.myapp.com - Make sure no conflicting DNS records exist (e.g. an old A record alongside a CNAME)
- Check that your domain doesn’t have CAA records that block Let’s Encrypt
Removing a custom domain
Click Clear domain in the Custom Domain section. The certificate is abandoned and your *.weekendbuilder.io URL continues to work.
Limitations
- One custom domain per project
- Wildcard custom domains are not supported (e.g.
*.myapp.com) - The same domain cannot be used across multiple projects
